UAB Grills up some Golden Eagle!

Alright everyone I want to give you a short history lesson on UAB. Since 1969 UAB has been around Birmingham bringing joy, hope and the Blazer way to masses.  Since it’s original conception UAB has always been proud of what it is, a local, diverse University (4th most diverse  in the nation btw) built on equality, quality academics and Blazer Spirit.  All of these emotions and feelings are embodied on the field in the form of our athletic department.  UAB is one of the younger programs around when it comes to having athletics…In fact this year marks our 30th year overall of athletic existence.  It is amazing to look back and see just how incredibly fast UAB athletics rose through the ranks of collegiate sports and established themselves as the newest and toughest kids on the block.

Over the years UAB has made some serious rivalries inside and out of C-USA. Memphis obviously in all sports, Kentucky, Cincinatii and USF in basketball,  Alabama in baseball, ECU in football, SMU in soccer etc…But throughout UAB’s short yet illustrious career one opponent has stood out as one that we as fans can say we truly, honestly hate them and they truly honestly hate us -
The University of Southern Mississippi.

I write all of this because you who are reading this may be new to the whole UAB thing and you need to understand who our rivals are and why it feels so good to come to you writing about the absolute blow-out that happened yesterday in Hattiesberg Mississippi.

Me and 6-7 other students took the boring drive down to the buttcrack of the south Saturday and watched UAB give So. Mess it biggest thrashing at home this year.  Let me say there is nothing sweeter then sitting in an opponents arena and watching as one by one the opponents fans get up in disgust and leave with their heads hanging ESPECIALLY So. Mess. So here’s what happened.

From the beginning, this game had all the makings of a fire fight. Southern Mississippi (13-9, 3-5) came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders and took a commanding 14-4 lead early in the first half of play. But, this was a game where senior guard Paul Delaney III and the UAB Blazers (16-8, 6-3) would not be denied. Relying on strong defense and smart shooting the Blazers slowly chipped away at the Golden Eagles’ lead and finally obtained the lead on a Channing Toney field goal with 5:36 left in the first half. The game would remain close until half-time, with the score going into the locker room 31-29. At the half-time mark the Blazers were shooting 13-26 (50.0%) from the field with the Golden Eagles shooting 13-25 (52.0%). But, the percentages would turn around in the second half in the Blazers favor. Coming back to the court from half-time the Blazers led by Paul Delaney III jumped quickly on Southern Miss with a 35-31 lead at the 16:08 mark and never looked back. The Blazers went on a big 13-6 run over the next 4:33 that quieted the majority of the 4,000 in Reed-Green Coliseum and put the Eagles in a hole which they never climbed out of. The Blazers would continue torching the Eagles from the field and gain their biggest lead of the game (66-47) at the 1:49 mark when Paul Delaney III put the final nail in the coffin with a steal and follow up two hand jam. When time expired the UAB Blazers stood victorious 66-49.

After the game the players came into the stands and shook hands with the throng of UAB students, alumni and fans and thanked them for traveling out. UAB has been playing better and better each week and will enjoy some much needed rest this week as they prepare for SMU next Saturday February 14th @ 2pm @ Bartow Arena.
The regular season is coming to close for UAB as they have 7 games left overall and 4 of them being home games.
