UAB Fight Song Vs. Alma Mater Vs. Blazer Victory

There are some misconceptions here that need to be cleared up once and for all. UAB has three key “songs” that are sung at various times. I’m going to attempt to explain them all to you and hopefully we (as a campus) will quit claiming that “Blazer Victory” is the same song as the “UAB Alma Mater”.  As you will see, two of these songs are really easy to learn and sing, and then you have the Alma Mater which is kind of tricky. I hope to find a few videos of these songs being sung so you can get the rhythm down. So, here they are:

The first, and of course most important UAB song, is the UAB Alma Mater. Just about all of us probably still have a little card from orientation with this song printed on it. Yet none of us know it. That’s probably because it is somewhat “hard” to sing and is not really sung that often:

Alma Mater

Here in Alabama, a place of rich diversity,
stands our Alma Mater, We cherish her integrity.
May each loyal son and daughter wear
proudly the colors green and gold.
Praise to thee our UAB. Her honor we uphold.Yearning minds of age and youth
live and love her noble truth.
Moving ahead with blazing speed
t’wards knowledge to empow’r,
in the heart of Birmingham our U.A.B stands proud.

Ok, so now that you just read the Alma Mater, you need to know Blazer Victory. NOW THIS IS WHERE IS GETS COMPLICATED! As you will see, Blazer victory mentions the words “Alma Mater”, which would lead one to think that THIS song (sang much more commonly) is the Alma Mater, which it is not. Very confusing in my opinion.

Blazer Victory

All Hail Alma Mater
We Sing This Song For Thee
Raise Up The Banner
For Blazer Victory!

All Hail Alma Mater
We Pledge To Always Be
Ever Faithful, Ever Loyal
To Dear Old U-A-B!

Last but not least, is the UAB Fight Song. This song is probably sung most often. The band plays it commonly at sporting events and almost everyone knows the words:

Fight Song

At UAB in Birmingham
All Hail our players bold
They are the mighty Blazers
Who wear the Green and Gold

Tonight let’s fire their Golden Blaze
The flame of victory
Go Blazers! Go Blazers!
Win for UAB!
WIN FOR UAB!

If you don’t know the words, here is a video with words so you can practice. I recommend you sing it at your computer as loud as you possibly can, regardless of where you are:

I suspect that Blazer Victory is the most commonly known because everyone who goes to a game knows to join in at “Go Blazers! (x2) Win for UAB”

The thing about the fight song that bugs me is the “UAB in Birmingham” part. Something about “University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham” that is just fishy. You wouldn’t say “UCLA in Los Angeles” (just like you wouldn’t say UCLA is California-Los Angeles, get that right media…).

And in the next 5 to 10 or so years we need:
    1. A silly song (Ex: Hotty Toddy, Rammer Jammer, etc…)
    2. A stupid slogan not related to our real mascot (Ex: War Eagle)
    3. A hang gesture (Ex: Gig ‘em Ag’s, Hook ‘em Horns)

I’m sure a few more rooster incidents and we’ll have something (“Fear the fighting cocks..?”)
