UAB Ends Season 0-2; Falls to Tulsa and Notre Dame
The UAB Basketball squad’s luck ran out Tuesday night as the Blazers fell to the Irish on St. Patty’s day 70-64.
Although the loss technically ended the Blazers season one could argue that the Blazers season ended the Friday before when UAB fell to Tulsa 70-67.
In the Tulsa game UAB was led by Senior Guard Paul Delaney III who had 14 points and was followed by Lawrence Kinnard and Robert Vaden who each had 12 points a piece.
Despite a strong showing by the Blazers the final buzzer announced an end to the Blazers CUSA championship and NCAA hopes…
The Blazers played a strong first half but either poor coaching or just not enough gas in the tanks caught up with the Blazers in the 2nd half and kept the Blazers from catching up.
On the other side of the ball Tulsa was led by Glenn Andrews who had 15 points and was helped in his effort by Jerome Jordan and Ben Uzoh who each had 11 points.
After the Tulsa game the Blazers received news that they had been placed as a 7 seed and had to play away…at Notre Dame…on St. Patty’s Day. To put it simply the Blazers had been terribly shafted.
The game started off close with the Blazers and the Irish each exchanging the lead 8 times total for the greater part of the first half. Robert Vaden came out swinging as he drained the first 6 points of the game on 2 three pointers. However, despite a strong showing by the Blazers in the first half at the buzzer the score was UAB-35, The Leprechauns-39.
Sadly in the second half UAB experienced a repeat of what happened in Memphis against Tulsa at the CUSA tournament.
In the 2nd half the other team just made more plays and out-hussled the Blazers and won it big 70-64. The Irish were led by their star child Luke Harangody who had 22 points in the contest.
The Blazers end the season 22-12 with keys losses to Memphis twice, Lousiville, Butler and UTEP.
The Blazers’ main wins were against Southern Miss. 3 times, Arizona once, UTEP at home and UCF at home.
The season ends on a sad note since expectations coming into this year were incredibly high for the Blazers. However, Academic problems and a rough schedule bit the the Blazers in their behind in the end and kept the UAB squad from achieving greatness.
Next year looks pretty dismal as thing stand currently.
Head Coach Mike Davis currently has zero big name recruits coming in and has been pretty tight-lipped about who all he’s going after.
Speculators argue that next year Davis may not even be here. Regardless of what happens iloveuab.com will keep you updated and on top of all the events happening sports-wise.
Now we turn our attention to Baseball and Softball.
Until next year we bid adeu to basketball and thank all the seniors and coaches for all their hard work.
GO BLAZERS!
