UAB Concert Choir!

UAB Concert Choir!

This is a guest post by Ashleigh Nkashama, a member of the UAB Concert Choir and UAB Blazerettes. Aware that students might not be aware of the activities of the UAB Choir, she wanted to use iloveuab.com as a medium to promote UAB Concert Choir’s upcoming concert.

Looking for something to do the day after Homecoming?

Then how about coming to the UAB Fall Choral Concert, Sunday, November 7 at 3 PM?

This is a performance you sure don’t want to miss – with choral pieces from
various languages and different musical genres.

Selected works that will be performed by the UAB Concert Choir include Duh Tvoy Blagiy (“Let Thy Good Spirit”), a Russian piece by Pavel Chesnokov. This piece will be sure to wow and soothe the audience with its haunting lullaby melody and rich chant-like text.

Also, the buoyant and colorful German piece Singet dem Herrn (“Sing to the
Lord”) by Heinrich Schutz has the Concert Choir singing in double-choir format, meaning there are two soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections, equaling eight voice parts! This elegant 17th century motet features not only 8 voice parts, but also expansive vocal texturing, intricate word painting and rhythms, and powerful praise only this choir can deliver.

In addition, Certainly Lawd, a spiritual written by the world famous composer Moses Hogan, is sure to have the audience clapping along. This gospel hymn has an abundance of lyrical color, powerful chords, and big vibrato, culminating in an impressive ending chord that will bring the audience to their feet.

This is just a sample of the pieces that will be performed – there’s much more music to be heard!

The concert will also feature a performance by the UAB Chamber Choir. Chamber
Choir is a select group of singers from Concert Choir that will be performing a number of vocal jazz, pop, and acappella songs; including two King’s Singers arrangements.

Best of all, the concert is FREE. That’s right – free! It will be held at Jemison Hall at the Alys Stephens Center.

So whatever you end up doing Homecoming weekend, make sure you come to this
concert! It will be awesome and a great way to support your UAB Choirs and
Department of Music! You don’t want to miss it!

Sunday, November 7, 3 PM, Jemison Hall-Alys Stephens Center, FREE
