UAB Brings the Bones Home! Win 31-21

The UAB Blazers evened up their record to 5-5 last Saturday and put themselves in position to make a bowl game with a big win over the Memphis Tigers.

My sincere apologies to you the iloveuab.com reader. I have seriously dropped off the map the past week or so. Homecoming took me out of my game but I’m BACK! And ready to get YOU caught back up on what’s been going down with Blazer athletics.
In case you had H1N1 and missed homecoming here’s the recap video ala my boy Josh Wilson with all the events and award winners- Homecoming 2009 (shoutout to my boy Andrew Stone aka Mr. UAB)

Moving past homecoming week the Blazers blew past the FAU Owls 56-29 and moved to 4-5 on the year with the big Homecoming win.

Now to yesterday. The Blazers defeated the emotionally charged Memphis Tigers to take home the Bones and right the balance of things in Conference USA.

Joe Webb showed up in a big way Saturday throwing for 378 yards and rushing for 52 more (that’s 430 total yards people). Webb’s performance was highlighted by a 77 yard touchdown pass to Nick Adams for his longest touchdown pass of the year.
But Webb wasn’t the only Blazer to put a hurt on Memphis on the offensive side of the ball. Frantrell Forrest has 7 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown from Webb.

The Blazers stellar performance through the air is great to see as Memphis did anything and everything to fill the box and shut down UAB’s top 10 rushing game.

Defensively the the Blazers played as well as they had all year. Shutting down Memphis’s Curtis Steele and forcing the Tigers to turn to their less than effective passing game. Lamanski Ware and Terrel Springs each led the Blazers with 6 tackles a piece.

Currently sitting at 5-5 the Blazers look to a team that has traditionally been at the head of C-USA, the East Caroline Pirates. The game, this upcoming Saturday, takes place at 2:30pm and has C-USA championship and bowl game implications. If the Blazers pull out a win (and Marshall loses) the Blazers will hold the sole spot atop of C-USA East. Also with a win the Blazers will be bowl eligible for the first time since the magic 2004 season.
After East Carolina the Blazers return home for their final home game of the year against the University of Central Florida (11/28).

On top of the incredible football action basketball season is finally underway! Right now our basketball team is 2-1 with a come from behind win against Samford. Stay tuned to iloveuab.com for basketball posts and scores.
Go Blazers!
