UAB athletics kick off 09 season! – Soccer

What up Blazer fans!? It is finally that time of year again! After making it through a slow summer highlighted by BBQ, Better Beer and Raven we now turn our attention to the never ending activities of the fall and sports season.
The Blazers have already come out on fire (haha) with our UAB men’s and women’s soccer teams getting the ball rolling early for the Green and Gold.

First off things got hoppin Saturday night downtown as the UAB men’s soccer team played ACC opponent Clemson in front of a record crowd of 3,481 (the 1 was me).
The Blazers trounced Clemson by a score of 3-0. 3 different Blazers scored in the match Senior Forward Two-boys Gumede, Sophomore Forward Babayele Sodade and Freshman Forward Reed Matte.
If you missed this game you seriously missed out. The crowd was awesome and West Campus Field has a whole new look this year! UAB Head Coach Mike Getman took notice of the crowd and had this to say-

I was very impressed with the crowd and anytime you have a crowd of this magnitude it gets our guys excited. Follow Coach Getman on Twitter

The men’s team will return to action TOMORROW (8/25) night against Belmont @ 5pm @ West Campus Fields.

Secondly the women’s soccer teams are currently holding a 2-0 record after a trouncing of Alabama and Ole Miss. That’s right our UAB ladies downed two SEC opponents and are looking forward to big things this year. UAB Sophomore forward Tiffini Turpin and Senior Forward Danya Barsalona contributed goals to the Blazers win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
A couple of days after the win in T-town the ladies returned home to defeat Ole Miss by a score of 1-0. UAB Sophomore Forward Laura Mccalla recorded the only goal in the game.
After starting year the undefeated UAB head coach Paul Harbin had this to say.

It was great to get the victory and start out 2-0. I think it gives us a lot of confidence.

The women’s soccer team returns to action this Friday to play against Belmont. The game is at 7pm at West Campus Field.
Don’t miss out on the upcoming soccer games and don’t forget less than a fortnight away on September 5th @ 3pm the UAB football team will kicking of it’s 09-10 season against Rice @ home!
Until next time Go Blazers!
