Tuition increase at UAB? Looking likely.
It’s already not looking good for the hometeam.
The Alabama Legislature opened up this week and already the prognosis is not good for funding of higher education.
According to the Birmingham News (Alabama Gov. Bob Riley unveils spending proposal) Governor Riley is planning on getting some assistance from Obama’s stimulus package. Without some aid, it’s looking dire.
UAB is already feeling some heat after the 12% budget cut Riley called for in December (that’s right, every public college in the state has to give 12% of their budget back to the state) and things aren’t looking any better for next year. And with less funding from the state, UAB has no choice but to raise your tuition (trust me, every other alternative has been investigated!).
What can you do? You think you’re just an average student without a voice? You have a voice. Time to be heard!
For now, mark your calendar for Thursday, March 5.
If you think you can’t make a difference, you’re wrong.
Last year, over 2000 college students went to Montgomery to protest cuts to higher education and we ended up receiving an additional $25 million. That’s a huge step in the right direction.
Sign up now in HUC 136. We’ll give you a T-shirt to wear, breakfast, lunch and letters to give to your professors explaining that you were in Montgomery fighting to give them a raise.
Most importantly – you’ll be able to say you actually did something to keep your tuition from raising.
