UAB Suffers Heartbreaker, Loses 35-33.

UAB Suffers Heartbreaker, Loses 35-33.

Once again the SMU Mustangs came to Birmingham on a mission and once again they stole a heartbreaker from the Blazers and claimed the win, 35-33.
The Blazers, who looked so poised and ready last week, committed 5 total turnovers for the day with 4 coming from Joe Webb in the form of interceptions. There are many things that the Blazers could look to as the difference maker in the game, like the 28-7 Halftime lead held by SMU, the missed extra point late in the third quarter that caused the Blazers to have to go for 2 and fail or even the 5 turnovers committed by the Blazers.

But, personally I believe the Blazers lost yesterday because they came into the game with a big head. The Blazers were playing a much, much less talented opponent than themselves, at home, and had just come off of a big win over Rice. The cockiness level seemed to be rather high yesterday as the Blazers ran around the field in the 1st half with the attitude that the game was going to come to them. However, in the 2nd half reality set in and the Blazers furiously fought back to within two and fell short at the 4 yard line with 0:13 seconds left in the game.

Hopefully a valuable lesson was learned yesterday. We haven’t earned anything, yet.

Now is the time for the Blazers to get back up, brush themselves off and get ready for next weeks Troy game. Now at 1-1 the Blazers are going to need to prove themselves on the field and at least split the next two away games @ Troy and @ Texas A&M.

Although the Blazers lost there were some bright spots yesterday. Despite throwing 4 interceptions Joe Still managed to gain 226 yards through the air and 120 on the ground giving him 346 yards total offense on the day. Not bad when you consider we only scored one touchdown in the first half. Jeffrey Anderson, Mark Ferrell and Frantrell Forrest lead the Blazers in receiving yards with 46, 45 and 69 respectively.

Once again this week special teams proved to be a difference maker as SMU started off with great field position every time we punted or kicked off to them.

The Blazers need to put the loss behind them and regroup because next week the Blazers will be traveling to the 0-2 Troy Trojans who just returned from a 56-6 smashing from Florida. The Trojans will be hungry as ever to get their first win and will be looking to keep the Blazers from getting 2-1.

Just an aside for anyone interested in going to Troy a group of students are planning to caravan down to the farmlands to root on the Blazers. Tickets are $20 through UAB ticket office. If you want to find out the details just email me.
But for now Go Blazers!

Dude no doubt! We’ve got some serious talent this year. we just can’t get ahead of ourselves! By far this is the most talented team I personally have ever seen wear the Green and Gold! I know Callaway will get the team on the right track! Next up-the sacking of Troy!
