UAB Football kicks off 09 Season this Saturday!
Alright everyone normally I only write articles on what happens after the game has started but today I want to write a “pregame breakdown” if you will of the game this Saturday.
First off let’s start with the Basics
Who? UAB vs. Rice
When? Saturday September 5th @ 3pm
Where? Legion Field Downtown Birmingham. (a little aside here if you don’t wanna use your gas or pay for parking, $8, there is a bus that runs from Blazer Hall and Rast that starts at 1pm and runs until the game starts and will take you to the game, for F R E E! After the game the buses will take you back to the dorms.)
Why? Because it’s YOUR team! Seriously. The UAB football team looks the best it has looked in years. Believe me I’ve had to suffer as much as anyone with the down years and I can honestly say I see some serious promise in this years team that’s been void in years past. And the first game ALWAYS sets the tone for the rest of the year. So if we all show up, make some noise and support our Blazers the ripple affect will be awesome and will make for a great year! Like our slogan says this year. UAB Football starts with U! Believe me you do NOT wanna be that one guy that missed out on a history-making UAB football season.
How?All games are free to students and tailgates begin @ 1pm!
Ok so that’s the basics. Now on to some of the more in-depth stuff. For those new to the University here’s a quickrundown of both sides of the ball…
Offense
The Blazers offense was strong last year scoring over 30 points in 4 contests and over 20 points in 6. The Blazers are looking for a more experienced offense this year with some serious leadership coming from it’s upperclassmen starters. Our offensive firepower is definitely our strong point this year. And a couple of reasons why our offense is so potent is because of the two playmakers we have playing pitch and catch on the defense.

Joe Webb #5 Joe is coming into his 4th year with the Blazers and his 2nd year as starting Quarterback. Last year Joe was one of two quarterbacks to pass for over 2,000 yards and rush for over 1,000. Currently Joe is on the Watch List for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. If you watch the Highlight video at the end of this post watch for #5 he’s in a lot of the highlights…
Frantrell Forrest.#7 One of the most explosive Receivers in C-USA Frantrell Forrest is by far one of the most athletic players UAB has seen on the offensive side of the ball. Forrest had a strong year last year despite battling a nagging injury for the latter half of the 08 season. Watch for Forrest to return healthy and explosive as ever this year.
Defense
This year the big challenge for the Blazers will be to have a strong defense to compliment an explosive offense. Although the young defense struggled last year this year the defense returns with more experience, more size and more desire to pound some heads! The defense really needs to improve it’s stopping ability this year because last year the Blazers had more than 30 points hung on them 6 separate times. With the worst loss coming at the hands of So. Miss (70-14 ugh). This year however, we return the majority of our starters who were mostly Freshman and Sophomores last year and look to build on last years mistakes.
The Blazers Schedule for the 09 season is as follows-
9/5 vs. Rice*
9/12 vs. SMU*
9/19 @ Troy
9/26 @ Texas A&M
10/1 vs. Southern Miss.*
