Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Break into Top 25
Alright avid iloveuab.com readers I freely admit I have been biased in my coverage of UAB athletics recently. Being born and raised in the south I have grown up a huge College Football fan and thus have been focused primarily on the Gridiron Blazers.
But I’m here now to say I’m a changed man. Our UAB soccer programs have yanked me out of my thrift-store seat and have made me a believer. Our men and women’s soccer teams have been on the warpath recently both breaking into the NCAA top 25 and smashing teams on their way to the top.
In women’s soccer action our Lady Blazers currently hold a record 9-4-1. As of today (10/11/09) The Blazers are ranked 25th in the NCAA RPI rankings. The Lady Blazers tied Houston Sunday afternoon to keep their record over the last 3 games 2-0-1. The squad returns from Texas this week to face back-to-back games against CUSA foes. The first of these 2 games takes place Friday night against Tulsa. The Game is set to kickoff at 7:00pm. Later that weekend the Blazers close out their home schedule with a game against SMU on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm.
On the other side of the gender scale the men’s soccer team has been on a 3 game winning streak with their latest victory coming over FIU. The Blazers absolutely pounded FIU and won the game 7-1. Blazer Freshman Forward Kofi Gyawu recorded the first Hat Trick (Soccer term for 3 goals in one game)for the Green and Gold in over 6 years. On top of their stellar on field production the Blazers are also currently ranked 25th in the nation on NCAA’s power rankings. Like the women’s squad the men’s team is looking towards the latter half of its schedule for more wins and a hopeful NCAA tourney birth. The Blazers will face rival Memphis this Wednesday @ 7:00pm for their last home game before flying out to Oklahoma to face Tulsa Saturday night.
Hats off to both of our soccer teams for fighting hard and doing so freakin good this year. Everyone needs to come out and support them in their last few games of the year.
Go Blazers!
