September Sports Preview

September Sports Preview

Hey Blazer sports fans!!!! We have some great games coming up in September and I have graciously put the home game schedule with a preview of the teams in one place. I know right. Awesome. Well let’s start with football. The biggest story by far is finding the starting Quarterback to follow in record-setting Joe Webb’s footsteps. Coach Callaway has decided to start Sophomore David Isabelle over back-up Bryan Ellis; however Ellis is supposed to play a good bit also. He says that the race was tight, but Isabelle showed more athleticism than Ellis. Isabelle seems to take on the same style of play as Webb did though, being a very capable running Quarterback or at least speculation says. We should have a better look at how good he is on September 2nd when he faces Florida Atlantic in the first home football game. The Blazers play in two home games in September:

  • Thursday September 2nd Florida Atlantic 7:00 PM
  • Saturday September 18th Troy 3:00 PM

Now on to men’s soccer. Men’s soccer has four big home games this next month starting with Charlotte on the 10th. They have already found success this year, starting their preseason with a good 2-1 win over Clemson at Clemson. By far the player to watch for this season is Babayele Sodade. The junior forward has already been named to the Preseason All-Conference USA team. Last year he put up some good numbers leading the Blazers in goals (7) and shots on goal (25). He should definitely be fun to watch and lets hope that he can have an even better season this year. The soccer team has four home games this month:

  • Friday September 10th Charlotte 7:30 PM
  • Saturday September 11th North Florida 7:30 PM
  • Friday September 24th SMU 7:30 PM
  • Sunday September 26th Alabama A&M 2:30 PM

On the flip side, women’s soccer has started off very slowly. With losses to Florida, Vanderbilt, and Alabama they leave us with very little hope for the rest of the season. However, anyone that knows sports knows that the beginning of a season has no meaning on how the rest of the season can go. They are returning three of their top four scorers on offense this year, Juniors Laura McCalla, Carolyn Polcari, and Tiffini Turpin, and this experience will help them get out of this slump that they have gotten themselves in. The women’s soccer team also has four home games this month:

  • Friday September 3rd Western Carolina 7:00 PM
  • Sunday September 5th Samford 6:00 PM
  • Thursday September 9th Middle Tennessee State 6:00 PM
  • Monday September 13th North Florida 6:00 PM

Last, but certainly not least, women’s volleyball. The women’s volleyball team is getting geared up for another season starting their home schedule this month against SMU on the 24th. Although they have a fairly young team, they should be just as good as last year if not better. Junior Heather Thomas returns as the key defensive specialist this year coming off of a season with 580 digs just 6 shy of the single-season record. Also setter Alison Woods returns after an outstanding freshman year with 9.94 assists per game. The women’s volleyball team may only have two home games this month, but I’m sure they will still be very exciting:

  • Friday September 24th SMU 7:00 PM
  • Saturday September 25th SMU 7:00 PM

I look forward to seeing you at all the games watching our Blazers win during the month of September!
