Private Study Rooms, Utilize and Prosper

Private Study Rooms, Utilize and Prosper

Wow, this semester has started to really fly by. I’ve found myself really crunched for free time, and I know a lot of other people are in the same boat. I piled on the commitments last semester and over the Summer, Fraternity, USGA, Blaze Productions, TrailBlazers….and the list goes on. This means that now more than ever I have had to structure my time and my life to be able to meet all the commitments that I have (I also have to find time to relax and keep my sanity!). This need for structure has lead me to utilize the Stern Library more than ever.

I’ve found that when I need to really sit down and get some business done, I do it best in isolation. I’m not someone who does well working and studying in a large group, I like to get somewhere nice and quiet and really get in the zone. The best place I have found to do what I just described, hands down, is in private study rooms in the library.

These private study rooms rock. It’s kind of like your own little private office for the day, you can escape from the world inside a little 4′ by 6′ box. Inside the little cubicle like room you will find a desk, a desk light, a comfortable chair, and most importantly a power outlet for you laptop. You can pretty much set up a small scale office inside of the little study cubbyholes, it’s nice. Now, I understand that this kind of environment isn’t a conducive one for a lot of people….in fact it might creep you out. No worries, you can also get group study rooms or simply grab a table in a random corner.

In order to study in a private study room (and group rooms as well), all you have to do is bring your Blazer ID to the front desk and ask for one. There is almost always one available (when finals role around though, the game changes), and they are free to use at any time. You’ll get the room for three hours after which time you will have to go and renew the room. Make sure to go renew it, because I think they will fine you if you don’t. Another thing, make sure not to lock yourself out. The rooms require a key to enter, so if you mess up and leave it behind on a bathroom break you are going to have to go shamefully ask the front desk people to come unlock it. (I once locked myself out twice in one day, FAIL)

Also, I wanted to point out some funny things about the rooms. In about 50% of the rooms you are going to find hilarious things written on the walls. Usually it’s something like such and such fraternity sucks, or “I hate studying”. But every now and then you will happen upon a study room that is just epic. In a few of them an ancient war is being fought, the war between atheists and Christians. I’ve seen everything from full Bible verses, to “What would Jesus Do”, and even the odd Origin of Species quote! You gotta love stupidity!

Now, go get yourself a study room and figure out that calculus problem that is making you lose sleep at night!
