Mr. and Ms. UAB – Andrew Stone, and Claire Sands
I must say that it has been a very good weekend for me. I am, as of Saturday, the new Mr.UAB. It looks like iloveuab.com and all that student involvement paid off after all! Never would I have expected to become Mr.UAB during my college career, I guess I just kind of walked right into it. I want to thank everyone who voted in the “election”, this vote had a larger turn out than even the USGA elections.
Along side myself on Saturday was Claire Sands, the new Ms. UAB. Claire is pretty awesome (I think she has a 4.0?!), and is really involved on campus. I’m going to try and talk her into doing Cute UAB Girl of The Month for this month, we’ll see. Here is the official UAB press release:
- BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Andrew Stone of Wedowee and Claire Sands of Mobile were named Mr. and Ms. UAB for 2009 during University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Homecoming game festivities Saturday, Nov. 7 at Legion Field. This year, for the first time in UAB’s history, the university’s students got to cast their vote for the winners in a special campuswide election Nov. 2-3.The top 10 nominees for Mr. and Ms. UAB were selected by members of the UAB National Alumni Society Board of Directors and members of the faculty. A panel of six judges consisting of alumni and faculty then voted on the winners. And this year, the UAB student body cast their votes for Mr. and Ms. UAB, acting as a seventh judge.
Stone, 22, is a senior marketing major and recent winner of the Aaron Lamar Jr. Scholarship. He is a member of the UAB TrailBlazers, the chair of Blaze Productions and a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
In addition to his campus activities, Stone has been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Into the Streets volunteer service initiative. He is the son of Karen Stone of Wedowee.
Sands, 20, is a junior biology major. She is a student in the Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP) and winner of the University Scholars Award. Sands is a member of the UAB Ambassadors, the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) Executive Cabinet and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
Sands also has worked as a camp counselor for Camp Rap-a-Hope, a children’s oncology camp, and volunteered with the nonprofit organization Loaves and Fishes. She is the daughter of John and Joan Sands of Mobile.

Lastly, I think that some of my Fraternity Brothers were happier than I was when I won Mr. UAB. Here is a priceless before and after picture of the Greek seating at the UAB Homecoming game:
