Leadership and Service Council Apps are Due Today!
The Leadership & Service Council (LSC) is an organization led by UAB students particularly interested in developing leadership skills that can be used in college and throughout the rest of their lives. LSC challenges other students to lead with integrity and regularly meets to plan activities for UAB.
All students selected are required to serve one year on LSC. These students are responsible for coordinating various programs and duties for the Office of Student Involvement including the following:
Into the Streets is our biannual community outreach day that allows over 500 students to do community service for half a day. Each outreach day, students, and staff from all over campus meet and go out to work with various projects in the Birmingham Area. Projects can range from painting a house to working with the Humane Society. Into the Streets has become a signature event bringing together a diverse group of people and allowing them to work together to make Birmingham a better place. The students who work with this committee are responsible for coordinating both outreach days in their entirety which includes site selections, transportation, food, site leader selection and training.
Ongoing Volunteer Service committee is responsible for coordinating all the continuous volunteer activities help throughout the year for UAB students. Each year the chairpersons of this committee will select several organizations or groups in the community to work with and recruit students to work with those organizations. Organizations that we have worked with in the past have been Ronald McDonald House, Pathways, and Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.
Monthly Volunteer Service committee is responsible for coordinating monthly service projects for UAB students to attend. The projects vary form month to month and are usually in conjunction with various events coordinated by Birmingham organizations.
Retreats committee is responsible for coordinating our annual Fall Leadership Conference and our Winter Leadership Retreat. These two programs provide leadership training for 120 students annually by bringing knowledgeable professionals to facilitate workshops on leadership. The Fall Leadership Conference is held annually in September and is held on a Saturday during the day. The Winter Leadership Retreat is held annually in January at an off-campus location during the entire weekend. This committee allows students opportunities to meet other students on campus and become more educated in the area of leadership.
Social Change committee is responsible for providing opportunities for awareness and action for the UAB campus to learn more about current issues and to act on creating change in the community. Projects with the Social change Committee consists of the Canned Food Drive Competition against Southern Mississippi and the UAB Hunger Banquet.
