iloveuab.com Sits Down with Coach Callaway!

So UAB Head Football coach Neil Callaway was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time to do a quick interview, shake a hand and save a choking baby…ok maybe not save a choking baby but the man does have skills. Let’s get into it

How long have you been Head Coach at UAB and which college did you coach at before?
I’ve been at UAB 3 goin on 4 years now. And I was at the University of Georgia before I came to UAB

Pepsi or Coke Fan?
Pepsi

What is one of your favorite memories from your college days at UA?
There’s a lot of them…I guess one would be my last game when we played Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl and beat them 35-6. It was a big game. Obviously playing against Ohio State but it was also Coach Bryant vs. Woody Hayes. It was a thrill to be able to win that ball game.

Do you have a favorite pro football team?
No. I follow our players. Obviously with Joe (Webb) being in Minnesota I’ll follow them.
Check out Joe’s 4o yard TD run against the 49ers from Sunday Night, Link-CJ

What’s one of your favorite BBQ joints in Birmingham?
Definitely Full Moon.

We’re raised in Alabama and most people raised in are Alabama or
Auburn fans. Why should students support UAB?

Well first of all I don’t think we should compare ourselves to Alabama or Auburn. We are UAB. I’ve been raised in the belief you don’t worry about other people, we worry about us. Take our academic institution and the success we’ve had here academically, look at our campus and how we’ve made it ascetically a nice place to go to school and I think if you chose to go to UAB you should support UAB and that’s what I truly believe.

Looking at your team this year. What would you say your team’s goal is for this season? Winning season? Bowl game? C-USA Championship?
Our goal is always to win every ball game, and the next goal would be to win the (C-USA) championship and then to make sure we’re bowl eligible. I think we’ve got a chance to do those things, and we’ve made a lot of progress but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.

Any last message you’d like to give to students about this upcoming season?
We would love for them to support us, love for them to get involved in everything we do. At the same time I’d like to reach out to the student body and if there’s anything I can do as a football coach or a football team to help students with anything I’d love to be a part of it.

Gotta give one final thanks to Coach for taking the time out to answer a few quick questions and definitely wanna encourage everyone to be at our home opener against Florida Atlantic University, Thursday September 2nd at Legion Field.
And don’t just come out to the opener, come out to all the games! They’re a great time to chill, watch some awesome football right off campus, grill out and hang out with your friends. Hope to see everyone there and
GO BLAZERS!
