Finals Getting to Ya? Celebrate Their End in Style…
Dear iloveuab.com readers,
Have your finals gotten to you?
Have you already visited the new starbucks in the library more times than you can count?
Have you sat up for more than 24hours staring at your text books and realizing that’s exactly all you’ve been doing? Just staring…
Have you had that last moment freak out where you wake up at 9:30am and realize that your class changed its final time from its regularly scheduled time of 10:00am to 9:00am?
Well if so we at iloveuab.com understand. That’s why we’ve created a collection of places where you can chill, smoke, drink, eat whatever you do to just generally unwind from the stress and toil that is UAB finals week.
First off we all know that

So where can you grab some of the best deserts in the ‘Ham? Well here are our Top 3 places to grab some sweet action (pun completely intended we’re nerds, we know)
Top 3 places for sweet eats in the ‘Ham

3. Name Hamburger Heaven
Location On 280 (with 3 other locations around the ‘Ham)
Distance from Campus 16.1 miles
Website Hamburger Heaven
Why it’s on our list Hamburger Heaven is a throwback to the patty days of old. With old timey themes and recipes Hamburger Heaven makes a great burger and fry to compliment what put them on our list: their shakes. Hamburger Heaven has the best bang for your buck shakes around. They’ll run you a little more than a shake from McDonalds and a little less than a Bruster’s ice cream cone. With special flavors like peach, banana and peanut butter (my fav) to compliment the already stellar chocolate, strawberry and vanilla lineup Hamburger Heaven has established itself as the place to find the ‘Hams best “hand spun” milkshakes.
Any Drawback? A little farther away from campus then the other two places on the list but as far as bang for your buck goes HH is the place to go.
2. Name Soho Sweets
Location: Homewood, Alabama.
Distance from Campus 3.7 Miles
Website Soho Sweets @ Soho Square
Why it’s on our list Soho Sweets has any type of treat your sugar loving stomach could want. From birthday cake icecream with pieces of cupcakes in it (and every other type of icecream you could ever want) to a 1950’s throwback soda bar to an astounding assortment of packaged candies and chocolates to the homemade, frozen cheesecake Soho Sweets will make your teeth rot just thinking about it. While the candy, chocolate and other tasty treats are indeed worth stopping by the icecream is by far the best in the ‘Ham and worthy of your visit.
Any Drawbacks? As can be expected with a specialty shop it can be kind of expensive but again like a specialty shop you get what you pay for. Brusters has NOTHING on these guys.

1. Name Jackson’s Bar and Bistro
Location Again Homewood, Alabama
Distance from Campus 3.7 miles (in the same district as Soho Sweets)
Website Jackson’s @ Soho Square
Why it’s on our list Jackson’s is #1 on our list for 1 reason and 1 reason only.
COOKIE DOUGH EGG ROLLS!!!
Now hang with me for a sec before you pucker your mouth like a warhead got stuck in your throat. The cookie dough egg rolls are by far the TASTIEST thing I have ever, ever put into my mouth
The cookie dough is homemade and served warm inside a cinnamon covered eggroll and served with a side of vanilla icecream and chocolate syrup topping. I PROMISE you you have to try this at least once. The Bistro itself is nice as far as restaurants go so if you go for dinner and dessert it’s completely worth it but believe me going for the dessert alone is not unheard of. Decadent is a word to weak to use to describe these things. I’m serious if your mouth could have an orgasm this would definitely cause it…multiple times.
Any drawbacks Not really. The eggrolls are around $6 so if you eat elsewhere and then come to Jackson’s and just order dessert (everyone does it so don’t feel weird) it should cost you about the price of 2 ice cream cones.
What’s that you say? Ice cream and cookie dough eggrolls aren’t the kind of unwinding you wanted?
Well fret not my friends because we’ve made up a list of the top 3 places to hit up to truly kick back, chill and forget your chem lab problems for a while.
So here’s the top 3 places to hit up for a good time, good atmosphere and good alcohol .
Top 3 Places to Chill (With Alcohol) in the ‘Ham

3. Name Buffalo Wild Wings
Location off of 150 in Hoover, Alabama
Distance from Campus
WebsiteBWW
Why it’s on our list You just can’t beat the specials that a national chain can offer. With HD tvs everywhere you can watch the NBA playoffs, get super cheap wings on tuesday and thursday, get on-tap specials ALL the time, and enjoy the sports atmosphere of a sports bar. Also the Birmingham Barons are right down the street in Hoover and have their Thirsty Thursday every Thursday home game with $1 beer and $0.25 wings so BWW is a great place to hit after the big game.
Any Drawbacks? If you’re not a sports oriented person then BWW probably isn’t the place for you. Unless you go on Thursday night when they have Karaoke. what? what?

2. Name The J.Clyde
Location 5 Points, Birmingham, Alabama
Distance from Campus 1.6 miles off campus on Cobb lane.
Website Site under construction but you can get the jest of it
Why it’s on our list unlike clubs or other rushing downtown bars J. Clydes has a chill atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate bar patrons. Easily affordable beer prices and a full bar at your disposal makes sure that you can get your drink on with your favorite drink instead of some lame on tap crap some places have.
Any Drawbacks? Right now they only have one bar in the back of the place but they are working on and finishing bar for the front of it that should be done very soon. Also there is only one guy bathroom and one girl bathroom so if you gotta piss, you gotta wait.

1. Name Blue Monkey Lounge
Locations 5 points, Birmingham, Alabama right next J. Clyds.
Distance from Campus 1.6 miles
Website BML
Why it’s on our list This place is the definition of chill. A little more upscale than J. Clydes with a more “available” liquor bar the BML has something for everyone who wants to just chill and have a good time. They specialize in Martinis and have specials that will be easy on your wallet and your conscious (hey who wants to blow $40 on liquor in one night…wait long story) If you want to sit back and live the high life BML is definitely for you.
Any Drawbacks? Like I said before a little pricey but if you get what you pay for.
Alright guys that’s it! Like I said this list in completely subjective. We don’t claim to know everything (just most things) so if you have any place you think everyone should know about to chill or w/e comment and let us know!
Good Luck with Finals Everyone!!!

Cookie dough eggrolls are the best thing ever!! I want one now!
This was an awesome write up CJ
J.clyde used to be one of my favorite places to be last summer, but since then it has turned into one of my least favorite.
service is beyond slow, it’s like mission impossible to get a waiter’s attention, much less to have them get you ANYTHING in a timely manner.
The other thing is their food. it used to be pretty good but the last few times I’ve eaten there something was up, mostly food being stale (I guess that’s justified by my first complaint)… also the quantities have gotten smaller but I guess that’s Bush’s fault lol
Finally, it happened a couple of times that on the official nights where it was half-off beer, we were charged full price (my guess is because it was a slow night)
I’m sorry if that was kinda harsh, I’m taking my frustration with finals out on this.
To their defense, they have an amazing beer menu, and a really nice and chill atmosphere and they often have some good bands
Naw tareq that’s not harsh at all. I’m glad to hear a dissenting voice every now and then. Plus I may have had a good experience at J. Clyds so far it’s good to hear a different side of the story.
And yes Sarah L. Cookie dough egg rolls are the shiz
Sounds like Andrew is gonna gave to take me out to a few of these places next time I am up.
Great job CJ!! I LOVE Soho Sweets- their gelato is amazing.
yeah you’re right, or it could have been that I was just unlucky enough to have random bad service night.
then again the place does rank high on Birmingham’s top bars
Jclyde can be quite bothersome sometimes, they are rather slow with service
I’m with Rex on this one. Don’t get me wrong stone your moms sweet marshmellow chocolate cake is good but I could use an egg roll myself!
