Cute UAB Girl of the Month: Nicole McLean
Oh yes, you know what day it is! It’s time for Cute UAB Girl of the Month! This months girl I didn’t know previous to the interview, but let me tell you, she rocks. While I was looking for a new girl to interview this month, I started asking around for someone who was cute (of course), smart, and really involved at UAB. The name that I kept hearing was Nicole Mclean who is a RA at Blazer Hall, I hit her up on Facebook and she was more than happy to do an interview! Before we get started, I just wanted to share something that I thought was hilarious. I am able to track the visits that the site receives, more importantly I can see the search engine traffic and the keywords that the visits come in on. For example if you search for “uab usga” and then you find my site in the search results and visit it, I can see that visit and that it was from that keyword. Recently I have been getting a bunch of visits from the keyword “are the girls at uab hot” lol, I found this quite funny. I bet it’s from potential freshmen coming to UAB. I’m happy to know that I am doing my duty of recruiting for our school. Anyways….Here we go:
Name: Nicole McLean
Major: Biology with Minors in Philosophy and Chemistry
School Yr: Senior!!
GPA: wouldn’t you like to know
:)
Relationship status: Happy to be SINGLE!
Where are you from, and how long have you been living in Birmingham?
I was born and raised in good ole’ Mobile, Alabama…home of the famous leprechaun. HA! I have been living in Birmingham since I moved up here my freshman year to attend UAB, which was in August of 2006. I LOVE the Magic City!
Are you involved with any activities on campus?
Many. I decided my freshman year that I wanted my college experience to be a memorable time in my life. So since day 1, I’ve been involved on campus! Currently, I’m the Senior RA at Blazer Hall (Blaza-blaze). I’m also a 2008-2009 UAB Ambassador…an amazing org of which I’m proud to be a member. I’m also involved with UAB Life 180, Gospel Choir, and other countless student orgs prior to this year.
You’re an RA at Blazer huh? Cool. What are the benefits? What are the drawbacks?
There are SO many benefits and some slight drawbacks to being a RA and forgive me if I sound like a “RA Infomercial.” Hahaha. But I would say the most rewarding part about being a RA, esp with freshmen, is the fact that you are really making an impact in people’s lives. In Blazer Hall, there are over 700+ residents that we are constantly in contact with and those are so many lives we have the chance to influence. With that, I would say a “drawback” (not really) of being a RA is that you are constantly being watched and observed by everyone else. As a RA, you are a role model…on and off campus. SO, that adds pressure, but the RA’s are responsible and amazing people in the first place. So, it’s not too big of a problem
And I guess the other added perks to being a RA are working with an incredible staff, a sweet free room, and free food. But I will definitely say that it’s a LOT of hard work…but it pays off
What made you pick UAB for college?
You know, I was (and still am) one of those people who wanted to pack up and move to NYC or Chicago…a big city. I had applications filled out to Univ of Chicago, NYU, Harvard, and Univ of Pitt…but I hadn’t pressed the “Submit” button on any of them. Then, a wave of reality hit me. I realized that I didn’t want to have to pay off years and years of college loans esp if I want to go Medical School. So I KNEW that I didn’t want to stay at home and that I didn’t want to go to Auburn or Bama. I started researching other schools in Alabama and that’s when UAB grabbed my attention. It was love at first sight. Haha. Ok, no, seriously. I saw the character of UAB and realized how much I could really see myself here. After sending in my app, taking a tour, doing some prayer, and getting back some amazing scholarship offers, I was signed, sealed, and delivered, baby
Have you ever shot a gun?
YES and I LOVED it! I was out in the boonies of Chelsea and my friend let me shoot his rifle, not sure what kind…I haven’t gotten to that level of weapon knowledge, yet. But it was definitely empowering! I want to go to a shooting range really bad. Any takers??
You are trapped on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you? Why?
Oh goodness. You asked me THAT question. Haha. Ok…let’s see what I’ve learned from watching LOST. Just kidding. Haha. Well this may sound somewhat cliche’ but first and foremost the Bible. I mean, seriously, it has all the dynamics of a great book…scandal, war, morality issues, and best of all, God! It’s definitely a large enough volume to keep me entertained and spiritually healthy. Second, I think I’d bring a knife, perhaps a slingblade. A knife could be useful for many things…cutting wood, preparing food, cleaning your teeth…haha. And I guess the last thing I would take…a dog! I’m a big dog-lover and what better companion to have!…other than another human, that is.
Ramen or Hot Pockets?
Depends. Do I have a stove or not? I can make a mean Ramen concoction. I used to love making it and experimenting with different spices…pre-college. Haha. But if I only had a microwave, definitely Hot Pockets.
What do you do for fun on the weekends?
I don’t really have a regular routine when it comes to the weekends. I love being adventurous and being spontaneous, though! I guess my fav thing to do is go listen to live music. But this may include going to karaoke and watching some terrible singers botch songs…can’t get much better than that. Ha. Umm….I love being outdoors, too! Oak Mtn is my getaway. I love spending time there…and lastly, I love spending quality time with my buds
How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a would chuck could chuck wood?
To get to the other side??? Hahaha. Lame, I know.
Favorite Band? Favorite song of said band?
Oh geeze, that’s a toughie. Music is like a lifestyle for me. I eat, sleep, and breathe music. Let’s see favorite band…I’d have to say Mute Math. They’re up and coming. I’ve been a fan of them for about 5 years now. I don’t really have a fav song but I guess I’d have to say “Stare at the Sun.” I love all their songs, though. Each one has a different sound. Extremely dynamic group.
How many Grilled Cheese sandwiches have you ordered during any one instance at the commons?
I’ve never actually had a grilled cheese sandwich at the Commons. I’ll have to take care of that and get back to you.
