Blazers Go .500 this Week. Win 2 and Drop 2

Alright readers our Blazers (24-20) went 2-2 this week with a win over Troy and UCF and 2 losses to UCF.
Let’s recap the action for ya.

April 22nd vs. Troy- Senior Brint Hardy went yard once and had 4 RBI’s along with a stolen base (FYI Hardy is currently #1 in the nation in stolen bases) to help lift the Blazers over Troy (24-14) 15-8. The Blazers fell behind early in the first 4 innings and were losing 5-2 before a big 5 run inning gave the Blazers a 7-5 lead. After taking the lead the Blazers never looked back and pounded out 8 more runs in the contest. The runs came in the 6th and 7th inning when the Blazers scored 4 runs in each. Offensively Hardy led the Blazers and was assisted by Nick Crawford who went 3-4 while at bat and was followed by Luke Stewart, Jonathan Merritt, and team leading RBI hitter Digger Towe
Defensively Junior Pitcher Tristan Ferrell collected the win on the mound for the Blazers.
The win split the series between the Blazers and Condom U.
with each team winning one match a piece.

April 24th vs. UCF- The Golden Knights of UCF blasted UAB Friday in their win over the Blazers; winning big 29:jawdrop:- 9. The loss was the most lopsided loss of the year for the Blazers and left the team with many, many questions that desperately needed answering going into game 2 of the 3 game series…
Digger Towe
April 25th vs. UCF- The Blazers were able to bounce back Saturday against UCF and come away with a much needed win, 12-8. Head Coach Brian Shoop had this to say about the win on Saturday and the loss on Friday,

Each day is a new day i guess. We lost that bad (Friday) because of me. It wasn’t the players. I made a decision, it was a hard decision, that we conceded the game and went with position players (as pitchers) so our bullpen would be strong enough to win the series.

I know I have this much to say. It is great to finally see a coach take responsibility for his team and for his decisions. Shoop easily admitted that he had to make a hard decision and let the pitchers rest so he could give his team a strong chance to win the series. For me, this shows incredible signs of leadership when a coach can say we probably won’t win the battle but let’s do what we can to win the war.
Luke Stewart
April 26th vs. UCF- Despite good intentions however, the Blazers fell short Sunday in game 3 of the UCF series losing 12-6. The loss dropped the Blazers to 24-20 overall with a 6-9 (don’t snicker) conference record. Although the loss sets the Blazers back a little bit in the conference record category the Blazers’ overall record still lingers well above .500 (something it hasn’t done in many, many years) and keeps the Blazers on pace to getting a strong C-USA Tournament spot.
The Blazers are off until this Friday when they will take on Memphis at home on May 1st, May 2nd, and wrapping the series up on May 3rd.
Keep checking in with for scores, stats and controversial interviews.
Stay classy Birmingham.
