Black History Month Opening Program
The University Programs Council Black Student Awareness Committee will be kicking off Black History Month with its Opening Program on February 1, 2012 at 6:00 PM in the HUC Great Hall. The guest speaker will be Cedric D. Sparks, Sr. He is the executive director of the Mayor’s Office Division of Youth Services and will be speaking on the topic of “Back to the Beginning – Where it All Started.” Come join in for some food and great networking opportunities.
Sparks has been with the Department of Youth Services since 1998, where he served as an administrative assistant to former Mayor Richard Arrington. In July 2002, he was appointed to the position of executive director of DYS. Under his leadership, Birmingham was named as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in America, an FBI release noted.
Sparks accomplishments include: named one of the Birmingham News’ “15 Leaders of the Future”; Ebony Magazine USA’s Top 30 Young Leaders of the Future Award; Birmingham Business Journal Top 40 Under 40 Award Recipient; graduate of Leadership Birmingham; graduate of the Inaugural Class of Leadership UAB; 100 Black Men of Birmingham “Mentor of the Year.”
