Interfraternity Council

Fraternities are student organizations whose primary purpose is the personal development of their members. All fraternities have rituals and creeds that promote ideals such as friendship, loyalty, academic achievement, leadership, personal responsibility, integrity, service to the community, and social refinement. At UAB, the decision to join a fraternity makes sense for many reasons. Fraternities are consistently some of the most active groups on campus, and members naturally become motivated to become part of something that matters at UAB. While many students come and go from UAB and never become part of the campus life, fraternity men are instantly “plugged in” to all the activity that is offered, and there is quite a bit. After joining a fraternity you may find yourself at the front row of a UAB basketball game, you may be thanked for your service at Into the Streets outreach day, you may win several championship t-shirts in intramural sports, you may find yourself throwing candy off of a float at the homecoming parade, you may be the SGA President, you may be trying to learn how to assemble a tuxedo for a formal, you may help to host a prestigious guest at the Woodard mansion as a UAB Ambassador, and you may find that your fraternity has a brother that can actually understand organic chemistry and explain it to you. Without question, as a member of a fraternity, you will be part of an organization that is based on something truly worthwhile. You will be part of something that you will remember long after you leave UAB.

IFC Recruitment

Fall Recruitment

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) sponsors Fall Recruitment. This is the traditional way that guys join fraternities at UAB, and it is easy process. In order to participate, you simply complete a registration form, which is available at any summer orientation or at anytime in Room 440 of Hill University Center. You attend one “info night” at Hill University Center which gives you a chance to formally meet each fraternity, and then you will have a time period (“fall recruitment”) to meet each fraternity at a comfortable pace (fraternities host non-alcoholic events over a month before “Bid Day”). Fall Recruitment is as time to ask questions about financial obligations, time commitments, membership requirements, and what each fraternity truly values. It is a great chance to relax and get to know each fraternity on a personal basis. At the end of Fall Recruitment, participants receive bids from the fraternities and may choose to join a group that has extended them a formal bid to join.

Year Round Recruitment

Fraternities at UAB are free to extend bids at any time during the year. Some students are not initially interested in fraternities or may not have the time for Fall Recruitment. In this case, students often get to know fraternity members through classes, intramural sports, or another way. This is a very low pressure and natural way to get to know fraternity men on campus. Every year several students develop friendships with fraternity members and ultimately choose to join the fraternity.
