It looks like Hula Hoops are Cool Again!

Oh. My. God. Out of no where, Jessica Seales has returned to write some. Gasp! -Andrew

There’s this new fitness craze that’s taking Birmingham by storm, and you’ll never guess what it is.

Take a 50’s children’s toy, add a few pounds and a few inches to it, and you’ve got your answer.

Hula hooping.

Yes, hula hooping. Well, “hooping” or “hoop dance” are the more appropriate terms. Hooping started in the 1990’s at jam band shows – particularly at shows by the String Cheese Incident. They were known to toss large hoops into the crowd, and the rest is history. Soon, hooping picked up at raves and other underground dance shows. Hoops became more elaborate with sparkly tape, glowsticks and LED lights.

Unlike children’s hula hoops, hooping involves large diameter, heavier weight hoops. These custom hoops take longer to go around your body, which means they’re easier for adults to keep up. I know you probably think, “I can’t keep a hoop up to save my life!” but when people try, it only takes a few minutes until their hoops are spinning with the best! You learn to dance with the hoops and do tricks – burning up to 600 calories an hour!

Hooping can be many things – a workout, dance, or performance art. I got into hooping after seeing many girls do it at dance and jam shows. After about 5 months of hooping, I’ve lost weight and enjoyed every second of it. It’s a fun way to dance, move and work out.

I attend a hoop dance class at One Nineteen Health and Wellness Center on Tuesday nights at 5:30 PM! Classes are $15/class or free for members of the gym. Hoops are provided, but there are also hoops of every size, shape, color and sparkle available! Everyone is welcome – check it out!

Classes are also available in Pell City on Tuesday nights! Contact me for more info.
