Use Penzu to Take Class Notes

Use Penzu to Take Class Notes

I just recently got a new laptop and have started using it to take notes. However, I find it kind of annoying to open up Word and then have to save the file on my computer somewhere, most likely buried in the “Documents” folder. Well, I started to do a little looking around on the Internet and I found an awesome free service that rocks for taking notes. It’s called Penzu.

Penzu was designed to be a personal online journal or diary, and it works great for that. But it ALSO works great for saving your notes that you type in class (Granted you aren’t playing on Facebook). The best part about the program is that it’s constantly backing up your work as you write it. Never again will you lose something because a random virus strikes or your laptop battery goes dead.

Two other awesome features that Penzu currently has are the abilities to lock your entries and also to insert pictures. When you lock a document it makes it password protected, so even if you leave your account open, your pesky roommate can’t read your personal stuff. And, if you would like to add a picture, you can do so easily. The picture will minimize over to the margin only to become large again when you hover your mouse over it. Cool stuff.

Let’s take a look at Penzu:

As you can see, things are pretty simple. I like how dead simple it is, but I would like some more features. Right now Penzu doesn’t support any text styles like bold, underline, or italics, and it also doesn’t have the ability to do bullet points. All of which would really come in handy when taking notes. Another thing that Penzu is lacking is the ability to file your notes in various folders.

The cool thing is, it looks like my prayers have been answered. Late last month the Penzu people announced that Penzu 2.0 was on the way soon! I sent them a message on twitter inquiring about the exact release date and they replied saying it SHOULD be before the end of the month. Sweet.

So, go ahead and try out Penzu, and then leave me some comments below!

I used evernote some to kind of try and replace google notebook, but it just wasn’t the same. I’ll have to give it another look.

Thanks for the great post astone! Penzu 2 should deliver the rich text formatting the current version lacks. Even more features that are great for note-taking are on the way!

    Cheers!

When I got my office package, it came with a program called onenote that is very similar except its not online. I also am an organization freak and it works wonderfully. Only problem with it is you have to be buying the student version of microsoft office to get it.

I also have OneNote and its awesome. You dont have to save, it automatically saves everything you write. You can save several different notebooks and different tabs within each notebook. You can type where ever your cursor should land. With explorer you can also take screen shots or just the highlighted text from a page and insert it directly into a OneNote page. It will include the date, time, and website that the information came from. what more could you ask for? Its really flexible and convenient. I love it.
