iloveuab.com is About to be Un-Stoppable
So, when I started this site I knew it had a lot of potential, I just didn’t realize it was going to be as big of a deal as it is about to be. Throughout the first 1-2 weeks of the sites creation I was writing to nobody, but I didn’t really care because I was enjoying myself. Well, as of last week iloveuab.com must have hit its tipping point (really what did it was the Cute UAB Girl of the Month, but I knew that was gunna happen, I’m not stupid: Women=Visitors). I have quite a knack for knowing what people like to hear about, and I also saw a HUGE opportunity for this website as a whole. There is nothing else like it. I saw a big gap in information gateways for college aged men and women in our area, I have now filled that gap.
As of yesterday, I invited two new people to do some writing for me, both of them friends of mine. The first is C.J. Britton who is the President of Gang Green and extremely obsessed with UAB sports. C.J. will be filling the gap for sports talk here on iloveuab.com, God knows I didn’t wanna have to write about sports (C.J.’s First Post CLICK). The second person that is now doing some writing for the site is Jessica Seales who has recently graduated UAB and been thrust into the real world (GASP!). She and I have been friends for a long time and I must bow at her knowledge for music and culture. She will be providing us with information on Music and Cultural events that are going on in our area. She did an amazing job with her first post about Bonnaroo 2009. These two, as well as our faculty connection with Jason Meier, should help to keep all the bases covered for now. It takes some load off of me which is nice, I prefer to write about The Internet, Chicks, UAB Involvement, and the Popular Culture.
If you are starting to become a fan of iloveuab.com, I have a few tips for you. First off I recommend that you subscribe to our RSS Feed. RSS stands for (among other things (people always say this when talking about RSS)) Really Simple Syndication. Now, RSS is probably really foreign to a lot of people, but at the same time very familiar (they just don’t know it). I’ll explain it to you where you can understand: Take Facebook’s News Feed for example, the concept is very simple. Whenever two of your friends break up, Facebook broadcasts it to your (and many other people’s) News Feeds. This let’s you stalk all of your friends from one simple location, the News Feed. If it were not for the news feed you would have to go to each and everyone of you friends facebook pages each day to see if they have new pictures, status updates, or cool new notes about 25 CrAzY ThAnGs AbOuT mE ThAt YoU AlReAdY KnOw!!!! A RSS Reader (Facebook News Feed) melds together with many RSS Feed (Facebook Friends) to serve this same purpose. It prevents you from having to view all of your favorite sites every single day one at a time, RSS localizes your interests to save you time. The best way for you to learn about RSS is to try it. I personally use Google’s Feed Reader, it is quite handy. RSS is great, almost every single site has a Feed of some sort. Some of the feeds that I am currently subscribed to are Failblog, iloveuab.com (of course), Free Shit on Craigslist (Birmingham), and Breaking News in the Birmingham Area. You can get some free interesting stuff from that Craigslist feed, I probably shouldn’t have given that idea away. Anyways, play around with RSS, it’s going to be the standard soon (really it already is).
Damn, that was a lot of writing. I have one more quick tip for you that i think you might enjoy: Gravatars! You might have noticed that you can comment on anything that is written on this blog. This is a good thing, I really want you to comment! You also might have noticed that when I reply, I have my picture beside my name. You can do the same. Sign up for a Gravatar account and any time that you comment on my blog (or any other Gravatar enabled blog) your picture will show up beside your name. This will be a great way to match some names to some faces.
So, you have two missions this week readers of iloveuab.com. Learn about RSS, and sign up for a Gravatars account.
Oh yeah, and I wanted to do a shout out to the people in This Thread at the BlazerTalk forums, it has sent me a ton of traffic today.
Thanks for you support, iloveuab.com is becoming more and more badass everyday.
