Schaeffer Crawfish Boil Releases Initial Lineup

BUY CRAWFISH BOIL TICKETS HERE!

I have attended the Schaeffer Crawfish Boil many times, even back when it was on 1st ave south and admission was a $5 ‘optional donation’. I was very disappointed with last year’s lineup, and even more disappointed by the choice to move the boil to the BJCC. While I understand that they want a larger crowd, the atmosphere on 1st ave south was always great.

Once again, the Crawfish Boil will be located at the BJCC. I am more impressed by this year’s lineup, though only slightly:

Saving Abel – Shiny Toy Guns – Shinedown – Filter – LL Cool J – Everclear – Jason Mraz – Katy Perry – The All American Rejects – 311 – Snoop Dogg

I refuse to bill The All American Rejects above 311 and Snoop Dogg. My initial reaction was a mixture of, “Ok, so this isn’t that bad” and then, “UGH Katy Perry” and then “Seriously?”

I don’t understand why the Crawfish Boil feels like they need to play to the ‘I have no real taste in music’ demographic. Sure, there are a few respectable artists (LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, and 311…perhaps maybe Filter). However, Katy Perry is absolutely awful, in that her music is atrocious and she has an overplayed “I am cute and unique” persona. She came out of a giant banana at the Grammys. It is my opinion that if your music is decent, you shouldn’t have to descend down in a giant banana wearing a costume made of fruit.

Shiny Toy Guns and The All American Rejects will certainly appeal to the drunken-17-year-old crowd.

Then, Shinedown, Filter, and Everclear? What is this, 1999? Do these bands even have albums out? I mean, I saw Filter at X-Fest in 2000 – back when they actually headlined. Everclear is another story – I saw them in 1998, when they actually headlined. PerhapsĀ  at their show we can all stand around and pretend that there’s no recession, and sing along to ‘Wonderful’. Upon further research, these bands apparently all put out albums in 2008. I feel like it’s a statement that I haven’t heard of these albums. Good lord, between these bands, as well as Green Day and Blink 182 touring again, I feel like I’m reliving my middle school years.

To the Crawfish Boil’s credit, I really do feel like they made an effort to book more diverse artists this year. Last year was a bit of a disappointment with the wash of top-40 artists. Even City Stages learned that diversity is essential in order to hold a successful festival. I like that they are appealing to a more diverse crowd. I also applaud their hip hop choices. LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg are some of the most influential names in hip hop.

Overall, I’m mildly disappointed, but will I make it to the Crawfish Boil this year? Yes. 311 definitely knows how to put on a show, and I wouldn’t miss Snoop!

Tickets are available on the Crawfish Boil website.
