Art Lapse

Red Bull will be hosting an the first ever Art Lapse featuring UAB students’ works on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  The Art Lapse event will involve sixteen (16) participants.  Each artist will be given one large wooden pedestal that each artist can transform any way they wish.  Each participant will need to base their work off the one or more of these words: action, sports, music, and arts.  The words are based off the types of articles found in The Red Bulletin.  Once each artist receives their pedestal, they will have 45 hours to complete their work (2 days – 3 hours).

The artists competing in this event include Anthony Phamo, Daniel Williams, Ron Crutchfield, Alexandra Jo Sutton, Daniel Weingarten, Andrew Williams, Chris McDuff, Sthefanny Hincapie, Yuka Nareta, Matthew Barton, Christina Daniel, Alexandra Nicole Smith, Brandon Oswalt, Blake Showers, and Margot Wade.

A winner will be chosen based on a popular vote.  This will be a great opportunity to support UAB student artists!  The artists will begin installing their work at 5:00 PM at Beta Pictoris on Friday, April 20.  Beta Pictoris is an art gallery located on 2411 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham.

Once the time is up for the participants to make their pieces, there will be an art showing at Beta Pictoris.  The two events are separate, but Red Bull is asking that everyone support both events.  The other showing is titled “Sapphic Dance.”  This show will feature a new series of photographs by Birmingham artist Carolyn Sherer.  Sherer’s newest series “Sapphic Dance“, “Images from the Kappa Phamily Fall Affair 2011″ relates directly to her groundbreaking and ongoing exhibition “Living in Limbo – Lesbian Families in the Deep South” at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. “Sapphic Dance”, images from the Kappa Phamily Fall Affair 2011 is a joint Soirée of members of Phi Nu Kappa, a non-collegiate sorority for feminine lesbian women, and Alpha Psi Kappa, the twin fraternity for dominant lesbian women.
