Legion Field Is Catching Some Flack!

Legion Field Is Catching Some Flack!

One of my good friends who cares much more about sports than myself, came across an article written by a South Carolina fan regarding the Papa Johns Bowl. As you probably know South Carolina was playing UConn in the PapaJohns.com Bowl (on January 2) which is of course at Legion Field. Well, as you might imagine A LOT of people showed up for the game, I would say there were around 30,000+ people there. Long story short, UConn ended up beating the hell out of South Carolina and that was that. But, that’s not why I’m writing this post, I’m writing because of this article which was written by Tim Pollock who writes about South Carolina athletics on BleacherReport.com.

If you read the article you can tell that Tim had a bad time in Birmingham. His team got beat and to make matters worse, it seems like he had a horrible experience at Legion Field. I must say that I actually agree with a lot of the stuff that he had complaints about, let’s take a look at some of his comments.

I had a feeling things weren’t right when we rolled into town at about 11:45 AM for a 1:00 kickoff, and the gas station worker a few blocks from the stadium asked, and I quote, “Is there a game in town today?”

LOL, this happens to UAB fans on a daily basis and we LIVE here! It gets better:

Furthermore, I will refrain from making too many negative comments about the surrounding area of Legion Field, but I will offer some financial advice: If you are looking for a real estate venture, I would not recommend looking in the downtown Birmingham area. Yikes.

Yeah…about that… that’s an issue we ALL have to tip toe around. Legion Field is not in the best part of town….that’s for sure.

As for the stadium, either the venue was trying to save money or they just forgot that roughly 35,000 people were going to show up.  Because there were more guys trying to get us to park in their front yards than there were stadium workers.

This comment is classic! I have heard a story from back when Alabama played at Legion Field regarding the “come park in my front yard” issue. The word is, people used to park cars in their front yard and charge people a little less than what the field was charging. THEN when their yard was full, they would call a tow truck and have all the cars towed away so they could park MORE people there. Rinse and Repeat! I don’t know how much truth there is to that story, but that’s hilarious. Next comment from Tim:

So few ticket gates were open that ridiculous lines had formed well before the game, and about four port-a-potties were available to the masses. That comes to a restroom per 8,000 people or so.

Ohh that’s really crappy, that would piss me off too.

Inside the stadium, the “Jumbo screen” appeared to be a Sony 27-inch TV bought from a local Goodwill in 1989.

Actually, it’s really just a huge Lite-Brite.

“Sandstorm” was randomly blared about 87 times—but never for more than four-five seconds at a time.

We hate this too. Really, we do.

I have to say that I agree with almost everything that Mr. Pollock said in his article. However, I don’t feel as negatively about it as he does…but I’m used to it. I really hate that a large number of people from out of town came down to Birmingham expecting a decent facility, and then were presented with such a bad experience at Legion Field. Don’t get me wrong, I love my school, I love my team, but I hate having to watch Football at Legion Field. Thanks for visiting Tim, better luck next time!

Birmingham is a football city. If we want to advance as a city, one of the things we need is a better football facility. I have always been a proponent of the dome. I don’t know if we can get the dome, or if we should start with just an open football arena, but we need something.

  • Realist says:

Legion Field is one of the main reasons “we cannot have nice things”. If the city could not take care of the bad one we had, the city will not be trusted to take care of a new one. The corrupt political atmosphere is another issue detracting from the possibility of a domed stadium. Until the political arena can be cleaned up, we should NOT go forward with ANY large scale project. Corrupt politics and expensive projects are a bad combination for those who have to pay for the venture (you and me – the taxpayers).

UAB needs it own football stadium so bad. It’s not even funny.

  • Morgan Stone says:

It doesn’t help that things like this dot the surrounding area. (Pic taken on gameday):

    Damn…..just….damn…..

We need to clean up corruption for sure… But Legion field looks like crap because its old and in a crappy part of town.

  • pj says:

where is the uab athletic dept on this. why can the athletic dept. not step in and either handle or ask for assitance, i realize this comment isnt direct for uab game’s but it would probably help to increase maybe some gameday traffic with a lil sprucing up the facility
