Hike, Bike, or Hunger Strike: Al’s Deli and Grill
This is a post by Stephanie Norwood, which will eventually turn into a series or reviews. We love series don’t we?
Mission: Al’s Deli and Grill
Distance: Hike
Location: Technically, it’s 1629 10th Ave S. In UAB terms, it’s on 10th Ave and it’s neighbor to the side of the 16th St parking deck that’s furthest away from the dorms.
Hours of Operation: 24/7… which is weird considering they get most of our business between midnight and dawn
Price: fairly cheap
Types of food: American and Mediterranean.
Stuff to try: Personally, I’m pretty sure they have the best damn chicken fingers and the largest potatoes on the planet. Their gyro is good (particularly with the special sauce.) Also, their tea has some sort of mint in that makes is a-freakin’-mazing
Stuff to know: Al’s is good to us. If you are a UAB student and you make a purchase of more than $5, you get a drink for free.
Why we like them: Because #1, we’re college students, and any restaurant that’s open 24/7 and within 2 blocks from all the dorms is going to be amazing. #2 Al’s also treats UAB very well. They’re very generous in donating food to our causes at reduced prices. They’re nice people, too. #3 They have a beautiful patio to sit on. #4-57 They have their very own set of pet pigeons.
What’s not to like: Their very own set of pet pigeons like to beg for food at the tables. Also, when you go there, you will smell like AL’s for the rest of the day no matter how long you are actually inside the building.
