All Work AND Play
A couple of weeks ago I went to the best concert of my life. Now, I can contribute most of what made it the “best” to the fact that it was my favorite band, but I have to give some props to the venue, Workplay, for making the entire experience incredible. I went to see Family Force 5’s “Tourantula” with Since Forever, Swimming with Dolphins, and Stereo Skyline. Most of you don’t know these bands, completely understandable.
Family Force 5 is my favorite band, classifying themselves as “party rock” or “crunk core.” This successfully independent band incorporates some awesome rock music with drum machines, key-tar, incredible vocals, synth, sometimes a touch of rap, and lots of tech editing on their albums. Each song demands a dance, for instance their new song that introduces the dance move “The Wobble.” The reason I like them so much is the personality of the band members Soul Glow Activator, Chapstique, Crouton, Fatty, and Nadaddy..just 5 country boys from the “durrty durrty south.”
The three opening bands
were the best mix I’ve ever seen at a show. Since Forever started out the night with a hard rock twist on a typical boy band, Swimming with Dolphins changed the pace to techno dance music, and Stereo Skyline…well let’s just say they were present to appeal to the screaming teenage girls. In short, my friends and I were dancing for the majority of the show with the lights and music going crazy, feeling incredibly close to the bands. Hence, best show ever.
The role the atmosphere plays in a concert is crucial. This is my second show at Workplay Theatre and I have to say, it’s an incredible venue in downtown Birmingham. Workplay has a great set up with a dance floor, stage, and tables and booths that surround them on the outside of the theatre. It even has a balcony so you could watch a show away from a crowd. Workplay has recently hosted variety of artists including Ryan Bingham, Sarah Bareillles, Owl City, Dave Barnes, Cake, Edwin McCain, Mayday Parade, and Shinedown. They also host regular events like their Chris Rock Fests and Latin Dance Nights.
They also have a bar area and a great place to meet bands after a show. Part of the reason iloveuab so much is its close proximity to places like Workplay to get some first class entertainment. Now, there was serious talk last semester about Workplay closing, but it seems the owner was able to save the place for the time being. Support the local Birmingham music seen by going to shows at venues like Workplay. Check out their calendar for shows on Workplay.com
