UAB vs UA: The Battle for University Equality
This post is in response to “How Badly is the Univ. of Ala. hurting Birmingham? (ComebackTown)” by David Sher.
David’s article says it all and I just wanted to take a moment and throw my 2 cents in. Please take a moment to check it out before reading on.
I love how people not involved with UAB refuses to give credit where credit is due. We are a powerhouse and a vital part of the state. You might not hear our name constantly or have families decorating their houses with our merchandise, but we do just as much as (or I dear say more than) any other university in this state.
But this isn’t an issue of who is better or who has more fans. It really is an issue of neglect. Is UAB being neglected and dismissed because we are not UA or AU?
I remember back in high school when I got accepted to UAB. Most of my friends planned to go to UA or AU and when they heard my good news, my excitement feel on short ears. They heard UAB and treated it like a consolation prize. A pair of socks when you were hoping for cash. That was my first experience with peoples’ misguided views on a school but little did I know that the ignorance would not stop there.
I was constantly asked by family and friends, “Why are you going to UAB if you’re not going to be a doctor?” I was dumbfounded by these comments. UAB is a university just like any other. We educate the medically inclined and the artistically enabled. Future teachers and present leaders. We’ve even taught a few people that had no idea what they wanted to do with their lives. It simply blows my mind how ignorant people are towards our amazing school. Especially since we have a pretty amazing marketing team cooking both moving and informative ad campaigns for our school. We are by no means a one trick pony.
I could go on for days but I must stop and get to my point…we are the University of Alabama at Birmingham. U-A-B. We must stop this ignorance towards our school. Let’s show everyone in this state that we are not just some distant cousin of UA. We deserve more respect, not just because we are proud of our school, but so others outside our world fully understand what all UAB offers the community and the state. We will never be UA big or AU big but we just want to be looked upon as an equal. It should never be a battle of funds or recognition when it comes to building a better education and learning environment for our future learners, leaders and live changers.
Feel free to leave comments and spread the word. I’ll do my best to approve them through out the day.
